From the early seasons until almost the last season, Zach had the power to say "time out" and everything would freeze and he would talk directly to the camera. It started without any mention of it in the early seasons, and then it ended in the middle of the show during the last seasons. Did any character or anyone else ever say anything about that? I don't really care that much, it's cool if it's just another thing on SBTB that didn't quite make sense...just curious if anyone in any season ever said anything about Zach's "powers" to stop time?

It was never explained. However, at least once in the college years when he would talk to the camera (wasn't technically a time-out) Kelly was included. Most of the time the characters were supposed to be frozen, but when he just broke out talking, they would continue in the background unaware that he is talking. But in 'Love and Death' where Zack jumps out of plane...she interrupts him and they kiss, at least I believe so. I believe there was at least one more instance, and I think it includes her as well. I want to say it was another College Years episode and they were in their common room....and at the end of A Thanksgiving Story? Am I wrong? I'll have to watch these episodes to make sure...you have me curious now.
I'm not sure about the original series. He mostly did time-outs in those, meaning they were frozen. I admit it was a little cheesy, but it got inside Zack's head, and you knew what his plan was. Like a narrator. He couldn't explain his scheme to someone at all times, so in order for us to know what is going on, the writers had to think up something for us to follow the story better.

This wikipedia entry (of which I admittedly wrote a portion) has a pretty good explanation. Screech is the only other character to be active during one of Zack's timeouts, but well...you'll see. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saved_by_the_bell#The_Fourth_WallBarb, as I recall, while Kelly is present for some of Zack's 4th wall breaking, she isn't really aware of it at any time. For instance, in the end scene of Love and Death, she never actually acknowledges the camera even while Zack addresses it. I have to say, Zack's ability to call time-out and address the audience was one of my favorite aspects of the show. In fact, I didn't find it to be cheesy or a mere expository tool at all. Especially since he often used it simply to make funny side-quips ("This is the stuff dreams are made of..."). Actually, it felt very much like Shakespeare's Richard III -- by implicating the audience in his schemes, we empathize with Zack even when he does shady things. It also gave the show a uniquely kid-like perspective -- unlike other family friendly shows (Brady Bunch, Full House, Family Matters) that generally still put adults first.

I always wondered about his abilities to call "time out", but it never really bothered me. I actually thought it was cool that he could just freeze time.

I seem to recall at least once when Zach used his time out powers to totaly screw with the other characters heads. Like I believe there was a scene where he switched around the furniture in Belding's office or or put a hat on Belding or something like that during a time out. Does anyone remember those type of scenes? I can't remember what they were, I just remember that after one of Zach's time-outs the characters would be wearing different clothes and things like that and be wondering what happened? Anyone that remembers, please post...maybe I'm wrong but I seem to recall Zach doing that during a "time-out"..

I did watch the Thanksgiving episode of TCY recently, and Kelly does indeed do something after he talks to the camera at the very end. He tells the audience Happy Thanksgiving and she replies, "Yeah, Happy Thanksgiving " to him. Normally she wouldn't have heard him and would've been frozen or she would be going on about her business.

They didn't do the time outs in TCY. They just have Zack talking to the camera.

They didn't do the time outs in TCY. They just have Zack talking to the camera. Yeah, he doesn't do time-outs...but as he talked to the camera, it is still suppose to have the same effect, just the people aren't frozen. She's not suppose to be aware that he is talking to the audience.
