I think she was only joking. I know I offhandedly say things like that about my friends, and rarely mean anything by it.

In another article from 2003 in the St. Petersburg Times she mentions she has quit smoking: "When I used to smoke, I stole this amazing ashtray from the Four Seasons in Seattle. I still have it, but I don't smoke anymore, so it's in a cupboard. It's gorgeous." I believe Saved by the Bell: The New Class has done two episodes against smoking--the first is called "No Smoking" which was from the third season (this can be verified by looking at the episode list for the Season #3 New Class DVD. Another anti-smoking episode, I believe, was filmed later in the series. |

That's funny, I just watched that epidsode a few days ago. Usually these "very special" episodes are corny or over-the- top, but this one was refreshingly real feeling and got its message across without feeling heavy-handed.
The cast member who was smoking in the episode(Lindsey) looked pretty comfortable smoking the cigarette, so I'll bet she was a real smoker at the time.
