Yeah, and I always liked that you could tell that Dustin didn't take himself so seriously. I mean really it takes guts to act like that on something everyone sees.

I just watched the School song episode and screech has some great facial expressions as he is singing his song for the school over the PA. I was laughing.

You have to admit that, for a kid (he was the youngest on the show), he was asked to do a lot of impressions that weren't half bad.
I still laugh at his "Geraldo Screech", "RoboScreech", and "Robin Screech" characters. The other actors rarely were asked to do characters like those.

Some of the time I thought Screech's comments were too moronic.. But I do think it's pretty obvious the show wouldn't have been able to survive without him. The only thing that really bothered me was when he would do stuff like I think it was the Fake ID's episode where they had the fake id's and Screech was like I gotta go guys so I can look for an apartment cause my mom says I have to move out when I'm 18 (correct me if I'm wrong). I just never found that stuff funny.. I did like it when he would do stupid stuff to mess up Zack's schemes though.. I think that was cool. But I guess to be a character like Screech you have to be over the top... you can't be normal

I never audibly laughed at some of his lamer comments either, but they were a big part of shaping his character. Take them all away and Screech isn't quite Screech.

i hate the demise of the screech character, the way they make him act stupid, say stipid things (yet hes the most inteligent guy in school) the squeeking in his oice, its all a far cry from the screech of 'dancing to the max' era and was probably the bigest problem with sbtb
i think certain liberties were taken with the character just to get a laugh

i think certain liberties were taken with the character just to get a laugh I have to agree, a lot of the Screech stuff was a real comedic cheapshot and not actually very funny at all. IMO some of the best comedy actually went to Lisa (and not always when she was taking shots at Screech). She had some fantastically witty lines and always delivered them well.

I think Zack was the king of one liners. Especially in TCY!

I'd agree that Zack always did get some great lines but that's to be expected. I feel that some of the other characters, esp. Lisa, were underrated comically.

Each character had their own sense of humor. I don't think we can compare who was the funniest, because they were all different. Thats what made the show so great!

I was born in 1982 and watched this show endlessly in reruns like most of the other people here. Screech was always my favorite character. I even bought the biography of Dustin Diamond written by Beth Cruise back in elementary school, but I lost it long ago.

Screech was always my favorite character. I even bought the biography of Dustin Diamond written by Beth Cruise, although I lost it long ago. Screech was the best and worst part of the show. He was definitely the funniest. Watching a few episodes recently, he was often the only humor around. I strongly agree with the notion that he got stupider and stupider as the show progressed, and it got very annoying. He's the school's valedictorian and he doesn't know the number for 911? Please. Also, he was forced to dress miserably in the original series. But something that particularly bothered me (and this was true even years ago) was the way Screech's "friends" would treat him. Yeah, I mean Kelly rarely participated, but the other 4, holy moly! It was a nonstop bashfest. Lisa and Jessie were the worst offenders but even Screech's supposed "best friend" Zack could be extremely cruel, like that one episode where he tells Screech "you never have a date" all sanctimonously. What a prick! As far as the subject at the beginning of this thread, Kelly was certainly nicer to Screech than the others, but that was because she was nicer than the others in general. I also remember one quote (I have no idea what the episode was) where she says something like "I've always defended you, but you really are a bozo," which wasn't terribly nice on her part, but at least it was rare. As far as Tiffani having a thing for Dustin, the only thing I can say about that is Wikipedia says Dustin never dated any of the cast members. That doesn't mean it's true or even if it is, that Tiffani didn't have a crush on Dustin, but somehow, that doesn't sound accurate to me, I think it was all the character. This is one of the main reasons why I think the New Class was a much better show. (I don't remember all that much about the College Years, although the premise is clearly ridiculous. Screech is valedictorian and he goes to some average state college?). Screech does stupid stuff, but no one is there constantly putting him down. I remember in one ep of the 2nd season of the New Class, Screech orders something with Tartar and asks to hold the tar, causing Allison (his normal and very nice girlfriend)'s father to claim that he can be quite funny and Meghan says "he's not joking." Those type of comments bare no resemblence to his treatment on the original series, but can still convey a similar message. Indeed, from the second season on (and not even very much in the first season, IMHO) there is no "nerdy character" who is constantly ridiculed by the other cast members. Perhaps parents had complained about the way Screech had been treated, or maybe they just got better writers, I don't know, but it was a vast improvement. Did anybody notice how in the episode where Slater, Lisa, and Zack came back, only Zack addresses Screech directly? I thought that was significant. Also there was an episode in the third season of the New Class where Screech and the gang go back to Cal U. and Screech tries to bond with his former frat brothers, who have lost all interest in him. I thought it was cool how at the end of the episode he called the gang his "real friends" and ran out of the frat house. I wish Zack and Slater had been in that episode to reprise their roles (although otherwise I really didn't miss them-at all), so that the message could be even more stark-the kids you went to Bayside with were never your friends, but the students there now really are. There were numerous examples of this throughout the New Class run. I could go on and on about this but I don't think this is the time or place....

I noticed that he made more stupid faces as the show continued. Especially the School Song episode.

I loved all the characters on TOS, but they ruined Screech in TNC. When he went back, everything was fine, but then they changed his voice, had him doing the dumbest facial expressions and had him in a friendship with Mr. Belding that never existed! I think Screech was at his best on TOS. He goes to do the TNC and it never made sence to me why they would do such a ridiculous thing to an original character.

I agree. His voice was really annoying on the last seasons of the TNC(season6/7) I sometimes couldn't stand watching the segments with him and Mr. Belding because of his voice. Also. I really didn't think he was funny on those seasons either. My mom can't stand listening to that voice. She prefers his character in the early seasons of TOS. Not to get off topic, but my mom is 54 and can sit down and watch the show with me. Each Saturday we sit down and watch an episode together.
