Here is another interesting "philosophy" of SBTB.
Many of you may remember that Screech wore red high-topped Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars ("Chucks" for those in the know) in most episodes of SBTB the original series, although in some he wore other colors. This was supposed to be part of his "dorky" image, as it was paired with his otherwise terribly mismatched clothing.
Screech was far from the only person who wore Chucks on the program, however. Many other male extras wore them, all of them the same type of "nerd/losers" as those who wore eyeglasses. Ironically when girls wore Chucks, it didn't taint their image in the slightest. I remember Jessie wearing them in at least one episode and also Lisa, and we were never supposed to think of them as being losers. (on a slightly irrelevant side note, Kelly was often seen in the classic Keds Champion, which are about as old and respectable as the mighty Chucks themselves).
For years, I associated Chucks with losers (because of this show and also Family Matters), but in 6th grade I got interested in history (particularly the 1960s) and got what was most likely my first pair (black high tops). I found out later that many, many very cool people wore Chucks and still do. So why did SBTB make the guys who wore them out to be losers? I have had several pairs since then, including one that is probably from the 1960s (off eBay-can't verify the exact date) and even one pair of red high tops, just like Screech wore. My favorite style of Chucks is the optical white high-top (not to be confused with the original unbleached white, although when the optical white gets dirty they look nearly identical except for the shoe laces). If I remember correctly, (and I forgot to mention this in my last post) this philosophy continued throughout the New Class as well? Please correct me if I am wrong. The kids used to make fun of me for wearing Chucks, but they were mostly idiots. They stopped doing that in high school. Does anybody out there wear Chucks?
