Hello all. I was glad to find this board, as I was looking to find a forum to talk about Saved by the Bell the New Class. I also have things (mostly negative) to say about it's predecessors(actually, ironically I might have more to say about the predecessors-there is something quite fun about bashing bad tv). I hope that all opinions can be tolerated here and people won't be criticized here like Screech was in almost every episode of the original series.
On the excellent website "jump the shark" (www.jumptheshark.com), there is some discussion on the SBTB page (which lumps together GMMB, the original series, college years, and the New Class, which is rather questionable), that SBTB was a very bad influence for children. I generally am not Simone who believes in censoring tv (indeed perhaps my favorite tv show, "Seinfeld", was often very tasteless), but there were some things with this show that were disturbing. One of those things was not directly stated (yet) on Jump the Shark, and it certainly fits the concept of a "philosophy."
As many of you may have noticed, every single character, whether they were male or female, student or teacher, who wore eyeglasses was always portrayed as a nerd/loser There was even an episode where Jessie was considering glasses but got out of it somehow, because she didn't want to be a nerd (? I forget how exactly, but she obviously didn't start wearing glasses regularly). This message had real-life consequences.
Largely due to a strong interest in reading, (and probably genetics as well) I had start wearing glasses in the first grade(this incidentally was the 9th grade year of SBTB, and the first season it was called SBTB). I was one of the very first kids in my class to wear them, but as my eyesight was already very poor by that point, I didn't really have a choice (I was obviously too young for contacts).
I was never very popular at school, and the kids used to make fun of me for different reasons (I'm not going to mention all of them-that information is not necessary), but one of them was certainly the fact that I wore eyeglasses. It is quite likely that many of these kids watched SBTB and were influenced by that. Also the fact that I was smart and a bit weird (sort of like Screech, but very little interest in science-I did like old TV like Screech was supposed to) didn't help matters either. I was called a nerd several times, and it certainly hurt my feelings. It isn't just some sort of casual joke like it was made to be on SBTB.
Indeed, I never did feel comfortable with wearing eyeglasses. That played a large role in my choice to get LASIK eye surgery at the age of 20 (that and the fact that I would actually be able to see without a visual aid). I would like to ask those who read this board (and may be tired of my derogatory comments of their "favorite show"), were you effected by SBTB in the manner I described? Is this the proper way to treat your fellow classmates with eyeglasses? Is it even acceptable? I hope that your answer is no.
