Hey Gang,
How about the show 24...anyone watch that? I just started this year and I must say WOW! What a great show! It plays out like a movie every week and doesn't really seem like a TV show. This has moved to near the top of my list for must have DVDs!

Friar, You picked a great time to start watching 24. Not that the other seasons were bad, but they were beginning to get a little formulaic. They had just about exhausted every doomsday scenario (nuclear bomb in LA, rigging every nuclear plant in America to simultaneously melt down, biological warfare, and this season, the nerve gas). And there was never any doubt that Jack would survive and catch the bad guys. But I love the twist of how the President was behind all of this. I just thought he was a bumbling fool throughout all of the mayhem...but I was wrong.
I don't want to get too political with this discussion, since it could get ugly, but my first reaction to the President Logan's involvement is that this plot line has just gone into ridiculous realms. But then I considered this country's current situation and I thought to myself "hmmmmm?". I'll just leave it at that.
I would definitely recommend seeing Seasons 1-4, either by renting the DVDs or buying them. You won't be disappointed.

Muff,
I really have been enjoying this season. It reminds me of a Clancy novel (of which I am a fan) with all of the twists and turns. The acting is very good and the storyline is superb.
But where would agent Bauer be without his Cell Phone, PDA, and the indispensable Chloe?!?!
Glad to hear that there is another fan of the show in here now! I will be buying the other seasons somewhere along the way. Can't wait to see them.

But where would agent Bauer be without his Cell Phone, PDA, and the indispensable Chloe?!?! Yeah, is there anything that PDA/cell phone won't do?? They've come a long way from the "Zack Morris phone". And I love Chloe! How fun would it be to be able to tell my coworkers to "just shut up, leave me alone, and let me do my work". She's so socially inept but that's what makes the character work. So how do you think Jack gets from the luggage area of the plane to the passengers next week? I love when people over-analyze every little detail of the show..."oh that'll never happen", or "he would have died in real life"...whatever. You have to have a fair amount of suspension of disbelief to enjoy the show. And how many of us have ever been CTU agents, so how would we know what's real and what's BS?

Yeah, my brother is like that. Doesn't like things because they aren't real. Geez, so what! It makes for good entertainment!
My guess will be that he comes up through the elevator in the galley, but given that this is Jack Bauer I wouldn't be surprised if he comes in through the engine!!! LOL!
What's your guess?
And yes, I used to work in the business world and to be able to talk to people the way Chloe does would have been wonderful! I love her character.

My guess will be that he comes up through the elevator in the galley, but given that this is Jack Bauer I wouldn't be surprised if he comes in through the engine!!! LOL! What's your guess? I have a feeling it'll go something like this: Jack: Chloe! Upload the schematics of this plane to my PDA! Chloe: But Jack, that's a decomissioned experimental Soviet plane. Not even the KGB would have that information. Jack: I don't care! Just do it! 5 minutes later Chloe: OK Jack, I somehow hacked into an old unplugged Apple IIe computer that was in storage at the former KGB headquarters and pulled the schematics off of it. I need to save it to a 5 inch floppy and then I can upoload it to your PDA. But Jack!! The only way into the passenger cabin is to go through the engine bay! Jack: I don't care! Chloe: Jack, you'll only have 15 seconds to get through before you burn to a crisp, and you have less than 6 inches of crawl space. Jack: OK, I got the schematics! I'm going in! I'm going to get this recording even if I have to die first!!

Hey Friar, I can probably answer this question myself (since your name is Friar), but what field are you getting a Masters degree in? Do you have to write a thesis?

Muff,
Yeah, the name gives it away!
My Master's Degree is a Master's of Divinity, or in less technical terms a Master's of Theology. Yes, I had to write a graduate paper. I titled it "A Critical Analysis of Two Sermons in Light of the Application of Law and Gospel." The theme of my paper was "karuson ton logon" (hard to write without Greek characters), which is Biblical Greek for "preach the word" taken from 2 Timothy 4:2. My grad paper deals primarily with the proper distinction between Law, what shows us our sin, and Gospel, what shows us our salvation. Probably more information than you were looking for! Sorry, but when I get going, I get going! LOL!
Anyway, I hope that answers your question. It was three years of grueling academic work followed by one year of vicarage (an internship in a parish (church)). Once I am graduated in May I will begin work at a parish of my own (which was assigned to me this week) and I will become their pastor. Again, probably more info than you wanted to know! However, it is fun sharing it with someone.
Anyway, I am glad to answer your query (and any others you might have) and look forward to more conversation in the future.

Wow, that sounds pretty deep!! Congratulations on finishing and your parish assignment...pretty cool stuff.
I'm more of an analytical thinker (I have a degree in chemistry), but I always enjoy philosophical discussions, even if I don't have the book knowledge to back up my opinions.
Whenever I tell someone that I'm a chemist, I usually get the glossed-over, "oh that's nice" look. Some people are genuinely interested, and some could care less. For instance, my mom has no idea what I do, and she doesn't really care (so to speak). A while ago, I was getting my hair cut and the stylist asked me what I do. So I told her that I was a chemist, and she then proceeded to ask me if I made weapons...as in WMDs. Gotta love it! It comes with the territory. I prefer to think I use my powers for good.

Hey Muff,
Thanks for the congrats, it is much appreciated.
So you're a lab rat? My cousin, who is really more like a good friend, is also a chemist. He got his BS from IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis - its a mouthful!!!) and then went to Notre Dame for his master's and PhD...all of this by the age of 27!!! He's one smart kid when it comes to Chemistry, but not one of these brainiacs you can't have a normal convo with, which is really cool. Like I said he's more of a good friend than a cousin, if you get what I mean.
I respect you science guys. Especially chemistry. Of all of the sciences that was my weakest. In my undergrad, which was also at IUPUI, I was an Edu. major (secondary ed.) with a concentration in English and Geology. I know, I weird combo. What can I say, I like to write, and I love rocks! Since earth science is often times aimed at non-college track kids (at the high school level) I wanted to reach them and say to them, "Hey, whether you are going to college or not, your are intelligent. Don't let them pigeon hole you. Make something of yourself, whether that means college or not." It was also to try and reach some who had been pigeon holed, and done so unfairly. They had been sold a load of crap that said they weren't college material. I wanted them to see that they were, and so much more.
OK, enough of my take on the education system. So what do you do with the chemical degree of yours!? How do you use those powers for good? And more importantly, do you enjoy it?

Hey Friar, Sorry I'm slow sometimes. Your cousin sounds a lot like me (PhD at 27, etc). Right now I'm working as a postdoc at Caltech in Pasadena, so I'm basically between a grad student and a professor. Still doing lab work, but I get a little more respect than a grad student...very little more. Actually it's somewhat easier than grad school since I don't have to take classes and no thesis. And, actually I found grad school to be easier than undergrad...you could focus on one thing in grad school instead of having to worry about the Intro to Theater test you have the same day as the Physical Chemistry exam...you get the idea. After undergrad I worked at (for anonymity sake) an extremely large worldwide chemical/paper/diaper/pharmaceutical company headquartered in Cincinnati that goes by 2 letters. I worked at one of their pharmaceutical plants in NY state as a lab-rat in quality control and hated it. Everything is so heavily regulated by the FDA that there is no room for imagination in your work. I understand why, but it gets really boring really fast. So I stayed there for a year and decided to go to grad school at the University of Buffalo. I'm trying to get a college professor teaching job right now and I'm finding it very difficult since I don't have any formal classroom teaching experience. It's sort of funny, if you want to teach grammar school kids, you need all kinds of teaching credentials, but if you want to teach college all you need most times is a PhD (which is no small matter mind you). But it seems like they now want at least some teaching experience. I love what I'm doing now. I have so much freedom over what I do, how I do it, and when I do it. Though the pay sucks. I could go back into industry and start at 65-70K minimum, but I've already done that, and I know that's not for me. So how did you like last Monday's 24? The plane landing scene was pretty good eh? In the past the show has used a lot of fake names for places and streets, but I know where all the places are that they've talked about this season (the Ontario and Van Nuys airports, the 118 freeway, etc.) In fact the Van Nuys airport is about 2 miles aways from where they landed the plane on the 118 freeway (the Balboa overpass), but I guess if you've got a fighter jet ready to shoot you down, you have to land the plane as soon as possible...here I go over-analyzing the show .

Hey Muff,
Not a problem with the waiting. I just wanted to make sure you saw this. If you're like me, you look at the last 25 posts to catch up on what's going on, and if there has been a lot of posting, which there seems to be lately, then you might miss a thread you were talking on and then forget about it. I know I have done this before and I was interested in hearing about your work.
I know the two letter company you are talking about in Cincy. Living in Indy most of my life, I made many trips to that area and know how HUGE that company is in Cincy.
My cousin would like to get back to Indy, he's in the Cleveland area now, and get on with Lilly. I have an old high school buddy who's dad works for Lilly and I know others who work there, and they all say that it is a great company to work for, and that once you're in you don't ever want to leave. So I think he would like to do that if possible.
Sounds like you have found/nearly found what you would like to do with all of that Chem knowledge! Good for you. And, although you didn't say this specifically, you hinted at it, and you're right, money isn't everything. I should know. I left a good paying job, loads of vacation time, seniority, and other perks, to go into the field I am now and start all over again. But I am happy and that's what counts.
As for 24, it gets better and better doesn't it? Looking forward to seeing how this wraps up. All I know is, when I grow up I want to be Jack Bauer!!! ha ha ha
Good talking to you Muff. I enjoy the convo.

How good is this show!!!! AHHHHH!!!! This is probably their best season yet. I love the plot involving the President and First Lady, it adds so much more depth to the show than just the suspense of Jack trying to stop the terrorists. How good was it when Aaron (the Secret Service agent) called the President "Charles" to his face?!? The President is such a scumbag, but it looks like Jack is going to enforce his own brand of justice on him next week. I can't wait. Hey Friar, since you just started watching this season, do you understand the references to the Chinese wanting Jack dead? If not I can explain, or at least give you a very brief summary so as not to ruin the show if you ever go back and watch the old seasons. Get ready for next week. 2 hours!!...and then it's over
