Mario Lopez pumps it up

Mario Lopez is a lean, mean dancing machine.
Really now. The former Dancing With the Stars contestant (who finished second to Emmitt Smith in season three), just can't stop moving.
''This is the busiest time of my life,'' says Lopez from Chicago, where he was promoting his new workout book Knockout Fitness (Rodale, $26.95). It promises to help men and women achieve their fitness goals in just six weeks by following a sensible diet and a varied workout routine.
The book's foreword by pal Oscar de la Hoya about sums it up:
''Hanging out with him is as exhausting as surviving one of my title fights,'' the boxer writes. ``Somehow, this guy is able to go full throttle 24/7 and still have something left in the tank.''
''I like it this way,'' says Lopez, 34. ``I work really hard.''
Work it he will -- 2 p.m. Saturday -- glad-handing at Borders in Coral Gables.
After a slew of national appearances, Lopez -- best known for his role as jock A.C. Slater on TV's Saved By the Bell -- will go back to guest hosting Extra TV and starring in Broadway's A Chorus Line.
With his schedule, we had a hard time believing Lopez could squeeze in daily workouts -- until we saw the pictures of his rock-hard abs and insanely sculpted chest. We also had a hard time believing he could stay still long enough for an interview, but he impressed us again:
Favorite tips in the book?
``I'm not a calorie counter. I try not to eat carbs after 3 p.m. I do have my cheat meals -- when I eat a steady flow of crap: pizza, ice cream, cookies, you name it. But you gotta live, just be healthy and balanced. There are no shortcuts.''
How was your DWTS experience?
``I did it because it was my mother's favorite show. Everyone thought I was a professional dancer but I hadn't danced since I was a little kid. I'd been working out for 20 years so I was in shape when I came on. The combination of working out all the time and stress was a good diet!''
What is happening with Karina Smirnoff?
``We don't like to talk about our personal life [but] you know, she's a great girl, partner and teacher.''
Fair enough. We have to ask, though: Who leads?
``Ha! We don't go ballroom dancing. But she's pretty good at telling me what to do.''
Any anecdotes from the show?
``I don't know if it's funny but -- we were practicing the mambo and I couldn't find her neck so basically I dropped her on her skull. Good thing she had a mountain of hair. She was OK, but was pretty mad at me. It was all over YouTube.''
Do you ever talk to anyone from Saved by the Bell?
``Not as much anymore but I'm friends with everyone. We were a pretty normal group; I guess it's a testament to our parents. They did an E! True Hollywood Story on us and it was boring.''
Excited about Miami?
``Yes, I'm a huge Miami person. The city, South Beach, the Latin flavor, all of it. I wish I could do a show there and stay longer.''
Will you go off your diet?
``Ha! Probably. I am going there with a buddy and we're going to go to some little haunts and get some real food on Calle Oche. I may have to go get some sangria at Versailles, too.''
• Meet Mario 2 p.m. Saturday at Borders Merrick Park, 358 San Lorenzo Ave., Coral Gables; 305-529-4567. Store opens at 9 a.m.; it is advised to arrive early.
