Jack Angeles
ANGELES, Jack Of Santa Monica, California, passed away suddenly and peacefully following a brief hospitalization at Kaiser Permanente Sunset. Born John Joseph Cangilos in Albany, New York on April 7, 1950, Jack was an avid debater and eloquent speaker whose debate team captured first place in New York State in 1966 and whose selection as the 1968 American Legion National Oratorical Champion led to his being the youngest person to address the National Republican Convention that same year. Jack graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA where he was valedictorian of the Class of 1972 and was a Root Tilden Scholar at New York University School of Law (J.D.'75).
A member of both the New York and California Bars, Jack clerked for The Honorable William Hughes Mulligan of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. District Court Judge James Foley in the Northern District of New York. He practiced law with Donavan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in New York City and Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP in Albany, New York before moving to California in 1982. Jack variously worked for Columbia Pictures and Wilshire Court Productions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Paramount, where he was head of business and legal affairs. While teaching as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School, Jack pursued his love for acting. A member of AEA and SAG, Jack played the role of Mr. Tuttle in "Saved by the Bell" and had guest appearances in other supporting roles including those in "Falcon Crest" and "Trial by Jury." Jack is survived by his two sisters, Rosemary Maye of Schenectady, New York and Margaret Cangilos-Ruiz of Skaneateles, New York; by his sister-in-law, Lyse Cangilos of Albany, New York; his brothers-in-law, Richard Maye and Francisco Ruiz; five nieces and nephews: Anne Cangilos Zylick of Orlando, Florida (wife of Justin Zylick), Matthew Maye of Austin, Texas, David Maye of Schenectady, NY; godson, Sebastian Ruiz of New York City and Rebecca Ruiz, also of New York; great nephew Jackson Zylick and many cousins. Jack will be sorely missed by his family members and his many friends on both the East and West coasts who readily appreciated his infectious laugh, generous heart, kind spirit, good humor and wise counsel. A memorial service commemorating Jack's life will be held at All Saints Church, 504 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m. The service, to which all are invited, will be followed by a reception with family members in the court yard. Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to Episcopal Relief & Development Gifts For Life (Animals and Agriculture) online or through the catalog available at www.er-d.org/GiftsForLife or to the charity of your choice.
